Trelawny cops on full alert
published: Monday | December 20, 2004

Tenesha Thomas, Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU: THE TRELAWNY police are putting special measures in place in the town of Falmouth - the parish's premier shopping centre - in an effort to reduce the twin scourges of criminality and traffic congestion in the lead-up to Christmas.

Since the beginning of last week, the Falmouth police have staged numerous roadblocks in and around the parish capital in a drive aimed at intercepting criminals who have been known to target the town, a popular venue for streetside vending at this time of the year.

STRATEGY

"We hope this strategy will help to curtail criminality within the parish and prevent the easy passage of illegal weapons throughout the festive season," said Sergeant Huan Genus, the officer in charge of the Trelawny Traffic Department. "Even though there is some amount of resentment by the motorists, this will not stop the police from performing their duties," he added.

Regarding traffic flow, Sergeant Genus said as a consequence of the increased patrols, motorists are now paying greater attention to the various traffic regulations.

The action of the police has the full backing of members of the Falmouth business community, which is expressing gratitude for the new initiative.

"This is a very good move by the police as it will certainly keep the criminals out of the parish," said Baxter Sinclair, the manager at Sinclair's Department store in Falmouth. "I believe that Superintendent Cecil Fletcher (the commanding officer for the parish) and the
members of his team should be commended for taking these measures."
