Douglas

THE BUSTAMANTE Foundation has announced that Miss Deborah Roxanne Douglas has been awarded the 2004 Bustamante Scholarship.

Miss Douglas was selected from over 40 qualified applicants. She is a second year student in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

Miss Douglas attended St. Andrew High School for Girls from where she sat her CXC, CAPE and Cambridge "O" and "A" Level examinations.

She has been supported by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Douglas. Her mother is a primary school teacher and her father a retiree.

MEDICINE FOR CAREER CHOICE

At high school, Miss Douglas participated in social programmes which involved helping less fortunate children with learning disabilities. She said her career choice of medicine "represents not only a career choice, but an avenue to help those in need emotionally and physically".

The Bustamante Foundation was founded in 1969 when Sir Alexander Bustamante was made a National Hero. After funds were raised in Jamaica, the United Kingdom, United States of America and Canada, Sir Alexander was asked what should be done. He insisted that the funds should be used to award scholarships to assist Jamaican students gain university qualifications, particularly in medicine and dentistry.

Since 1970, the Foundation which is chaired by its founder Dr. Victor Page, a Jamaican in London, has awarded some 60 scholarships and bursaries.
