Ralph ready for La Liga
published: Tuesday | December 21, 2004

By LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

Ralph

JAMAICA STRIKER Damani Ralph, who is in line for a transfer to Spanish club Malaga, said he expects to contribute as well as learn from the club when he joins it next month.

United States' Major League Soccer (MLS) team Chicago Fire, which Ralph plays for, is finalising negotiations with Malaga for the transfer period next month.

Ralph is now waiting to get his passport and said he is looking for a mutually benefiting experience.

DIFFERENT STYLE

"Going there is a whole different style of football, but I definitely think I can bring something to the club and hopefully I can go there and learn something too," he said.

"Malaga has seen my tapes and they already know they want to sign me. I'm just waiting on my passport and hopefully when I get it I can move in January."

Malaga are in the relegation zone of the Spanish league - La Liga - and if Ralph adapts quickly he could help to pull them out of the doldrums.

Ralph, 24, said this was a very important move in his young career.

"This would be a once in a lifetime experience for me and a tremendous step in my career," he said.

Ralph was in the stands of the National Stadium on Sunday watching Jamaica get past St. Lucia 2-1 in the CFU/Digicel Caribbean Cup where they move on to play French Guyana in the final round.

He trained with the team on Saturday but opted not to play as he felt he was not ready.

"I came to Jamaica Friday night and went to practice Saturday and I was feeling a bit jet-lagged so I told the coaching staff I wasn't physically or mentally ready to play," he said.

"But I told them if they need me I'll be available on January 9 and 16 when we play French Guiana."
