Taking away a sacred gift
published: Friday | December 24, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

LAST TUESDAY evening, my cousin was brutally slaughtered by the police and thrown into the trunk of their vehicle. This is the ultimate fate of many young men who live in inner-city communities such as St. John's Road, Spanish Town. It is very sad that Jamaicans have decided that the only solution to problems such as these is to move out of inner-city communities. We are of the opinion that not to move is to sign your own death warrant.

I know the common argument is that most of these young men are not at all innocent and the relatives are always pronouncing innocence. Though this may express some amount of truth, the police had no legal basis to do what they did Tuesday evening. A gruesome crime was committed by these lawmen. They took away the sacred gift of life. A gift they cannot return. Some of the police in Jamaica are worse than the criminals and they should be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted according to their crimes. It is inhumane to put a wounded man in the trunk of a vehicle. Let not the ultimate fate of our inner-city youths be their graves!

I am, etc.,

GRIEVING
