THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WOULD like to respond to Mike Ford's letter regarding the current solution for the poor state of the education system.
According to Mr. Ford, persons have no right to argue that parents should play a role in the business of education. How does that make sense to Mr. Ford?
Parents need to be involved at every level of their children's education. They need to ensure that their children are, in fact, doing their homework, and attend the very crucial parent-teacher conferences.
I am a 19-year-old second year student at the University of the West Indies. While in school, my mother attended every single one of the parent-teacher conferences.
Knowing that she would attend, I worked very hard, because I did not want the teachers to have anything negative to tell her. My mother attended because she was interested in my education, and did not just rely on the teachers to do all the work.
Why is it that in this so-called solution, no one has taken into account those children who are simply not interested?
Society needs to stop placing all the blame on teachers for the poor state of our education system. We need to remember that education begins in the home, not in the schools.
I am, etc..,
