Four teams battle for final places today
published: Wednesday | December 29, 2004

Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

FOUR TEAMS will go into this afternoon's final set of first-round games in the Captain's Bakery Western Confederation Super League with a shot at qualifying for the end-of-round-final to be played early next year.

Zone One leaders Mt. Salem will need only a draw in their game against second-place Orange Hill in the first game of a doubleheader at Jarrett Park while joint Zone Two leaders, Seba United and Salt Spring, must win to secure their places.

Seba United, who will host Tomorrow's People in the second game at Jarrett Park, and Salt Spring who will host Petersfield at Cornwall College, are on eight points each, with Seba United just slightly ahead on goal difference.

Granville are also in with a long shot in Zone Two but must win and hope Seba United and Salt Spring lose for them to move ahead in the standings.

The odds will favour the leaders, however, but Mt. Salem will have a fight on their hands against Westmoreland's Orange Hill, losers on penalties in last season's final to Wadadah.

BEST SCORING TEAM

After beating Roaring River 2-1 in the last set of matches that was played on Thursday, Orange Hill are the best scoring team in the league with nine goals for and with only three against.

Mt. Salem just managed to get by fellow St. James team Altobar 3-2, after going down 1-0 to a full strength Wadadah team in a St. James FA Knockout game but will have the home advantage.

Seba United were held 1-1 by Salt Spring on Thursday but Tomorrow's People, with one point from three games and yet to score a goal, are not expected to give them much of a struggle.

Salt Spring should have the edge over the Dave Scott-coached Petersfield whose only win so far came against Lacers in their last game at home.

The round will be completed on Friday when Petersfield play Tomorrow's People in a rescheduled game at Petersfield.
