Walderston, Manchester:
WORKMEN FROM the WINDALCO Bauxite Company has commenced repairs on the Kendal Police Station, Manchester which was damaged by Hurricane Ivan.
Built in 1891, the sturdy cut-stone walls of the small station had withstood several hurricanes and other disasters but the devastating force of the category four hurricane on September 11 completely removed the roof and did extensive damage to fixtures and furniture.
"Immediately after hurricane Ivan damaged the station WINDALCO offered to repair it, but although this was submitted to the (security) ministry, it is still awaiting approval", according to CCN officer Corporal R Salmon.
WINDALCO's communications manager, Kayon Headley told The Gleaner that following Hurricane Ivan over 30 institutions were identified for assistance under the company's disaster fund. Kendal Police Station, she said, was one such institution which WINDALCO had given its commitment of $430,000 after estimates were verified. "I am very happy to hear that work has started," said Miss Headley.
Following the damage to the station building the entire staff was transferred to the adjoining station at Williamsfield as well as Mandeville and citizens had to rely on these stations or call 119.
