WITH OVER 24 persons killed in traffic accidents since December, the police are reporting that they have issued more than 5,000 tickets to traffic offenders over the past week.Between December 22 and 28, the police said 5,412 tickets were issued islandwide, with Traffic Headquarters and Highway Patrol accounting for 1,496 tickets. Further reports are that 1,204 of these tickets were issued for excessive speeding, while obstructing traffic and safety devices accounted for 384, another 226 were prosecuted for disobeying road signs.
The lawmen said 194 motorists were ticketed for improper overtaking, 98 others were booked for careless driving, 87 for dangerous driving and 34 for driving defective vehicles.
Up to yesterday the police were reporting that there were 344 fatalities, from 294 accidents. According to police records, this shows 47 fewer fatalities than the corresponding period for last year.
Most of the traffic accidents were as a result of excessive speeding, losing control of vehicle, pedestrian stepping into the path of oncoming vehicles and improper overtaking.
