THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM a Jamaican and I am very concerned about the issue of crime
and what plans the Jamaican government intends to implement to curb this crime
wave that is destroying our beautiful island. I plan to some day return to my
country but not under these conditions.
I strongly propose that the government send a team of detectives
to the U.S. to understudy the U.S. police system in the areas of forensic science,
homicide investigation, procedures and investigation strategies and updating
their communication network system.
Another point of concern is the alarming number of deportees
entering the island from the U.S. and other countries. I personally believe
that we should accept only the deportees that are classified as illegal aliens
in the U.S., the legal ones should remain in the U.S. since when they left our
country they had no criminal record. They should be the ones to deal with this
problem because they accepted them
in their society. The U.S. is dumping their problem on us by dumping the deportees
on us.
The government needs to create job opportunities for the many
young people who are leaving high schools. The market is already saturated and
unemployment is high. The existing job market places too much emphasis on CXC
and GCE passes. A high school graduation should be sufficient as most children
who go to a high school are from poor parents who can't afford to pay the exam
fees. These graduates become idle and emulate the dons and then turn to crime.
There are many acres of idle lands in Jamaica that can be put
to good use and increase exports from Jamaica.
I am, etc.,
