Tomato glut in St Catherine
published: Saturday | January 8, 2005

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN:

AN OVERSUPPLY of tomatoes in St. Catherine three months after Hurricane Ivan affected production and is causing vendors to lose profits.

Several vendors in the Princess market, Spanish Town, said while there were adequate supplies of locally-produced cabbage, lettuce, cucumber, okra and bean, there was a glut in tomato.

According to the vendors, they have been forced to sell the produce between $20 and $30 per pound, making only marginal profits. When Farmers Weekly visited the market, several pounds of tomato were left to spoil on the ground. But while the vendors are dissatisfied, buyers are happy for the availability of local vegetables.
