Thirteen arrested on charter flight from Jamaica
published: Saturday | January 8, 2005

THIRTEEN PERSONS who arrived on a chartered flight from Jamaica to Bermuda have been arrested on drug related charges, according to Bermuda's Royal Gazette newspaper.

The newspaper report noted that the 13, including three persons over the age of 50, were arrested at the airport on Wednesday night after police and Customs officers discovered an unspecified amount of drugs coming off the flight from Jamaica.

SEVERAL DRUG CHARGES

Charges against the 13 arrested include suspicion of drug importation, obstruction of police officers, warrants, and assault. Seven males were arrested (four for drugs), and six females (five for drugs). Of the women arrested for drugs, one was 50 and another was 55.

Contacted last night, senior officers at the local Narcotics and the Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID), said they were unaware of the incident in Bermuda. An officer at the Narcotics Division said he had heard reports that 15 Jamaicans and two pilots who attempted to enter the Bahamas were refused permission to land there.

The plane had to return to Jamaica and on their arrival, the passengers were temporarily detained on suspicion of smuggling drugs, he noted.

Another senior officer who spoke with The Gleaner said on Friday, two law enforcement officers from Bermuda had indicated that they were coming to see him. "They did not say what they wanted to see me about," he said.
