Greater censorship?
published: Saturday | January 8, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE in reference to the freedom of expression which is abused on a daily basis by those claiming to be entertainers.

I just had the unfortunate experience of viewing part of a music-cum-porn video on Hype TV. The entertainers (for they cannot be seriously regarded as singers) in question call themselves 'Ward 21' and the so-called song is a remix of the American hit Come baby come.

It was the most vulgar display I have seen in a long while, and the young ladies in particular ought to be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

There is even a simulated lesbian scene in the video. How did that ever get released in a society as homophobic as ours is declared to be? Is it any wonder then that our teenagers behave like dogs in heat on the buses, when all they are fed are these pornographic videos and records, pretending to be music videos and songs?

I know Francois St.Juste and the defenders of 'no censorship' will object to my proposal, but I seriously think that the time has come for us to revisit the issue of censorship.

I wish Cordel Greene and the Broadcast Commission every success this year as they continue to try to bring some sanity to the craziness which is taking place on our airwaves, and turning our young people into crass, over-sexed beasts.

I am, etc.,

K. BERNARD
