Funeral service for Kenneth Rattray today
published: Saturday | January 8, 2005

Rattray

ATTORNEY-GENERAL and Minister of Justice, A.J. Nicholson, and Foreign Affairs Minister, K.D. Knight, in tributes to the late Dr. Kenneth Rattray, have described him as an eminent legal mind and international diplomat of international renown.

"We remember him as an eminent legal mind whose vast expanse of learning set the benchmark for all who came within his sphere of influence (and) a leader at the Bar armed with the depth of research that he never failed to undertake...," Mr. Nicholson said of Dr. Rattray in a statement.

SHREWD DIPLOMAT

Dr. Rattray was a member of the Attorney-General's Chambers at the time of independence and experienced the legal and constitutional adjustments that had to be done on the outcome of a referendum to determine Jamaica's continued participation in the West Indies Federation.

Mr. Knight said "it was Dr. Rattray's shrewd intellect and negotiating skills, combined with his sharp diplomacy, which contributed to making the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea a reality."

OTHER APPOINTMENTS

Dr. Rattray was appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Jamaica and ambassador-at-large in 1974. He served as rapporteur-general of the Law of Sea Conference, Rapporteur-General of the International Seabed Authority and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and contributed significantly to the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

The thanksgiving service for the late Dr. Rattray will be held today at the University Chapel, Mona, St. Andrew at 2:00 p.m.
