Adventists urge J'cans to give more
published: Tuesday | January 11, 2005

THE LOCAL arm of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is urging Jamaicans to "give until it hurts" in assisting tsumani victims in South-east Asia. The organisation has set up an account at the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) to receive donations toward the cause.

The account number is 10307395. Persons can also call this special hotline: 625-2005/962-2910, or email adra@wiunion.org to make donations.

Dr. Patrick Allen, president of ADRA-Jamaica, said Jamaicans should "give until it hurts (as) this surely is a moment to prove God's love in us by giving selflessly to help restore the broken lives of those who have survived this terrible disaster."

As part of their contribution, all 720 Adventist churches and companies of the West Indies Union Conference, which includes the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, will be collecting a special offering on January 29 towards the fund.

PRIVATE FUNDS

Dr. Allen said ADRA-Jamaica expects to raise between $3 million and $5 million in Jamaica alone. ADRA, which is the worldwide relief arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, has already committed more than US$500,000 in private funds and said it currently has relief teams in Indonesia, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka assisting with medical services, and the distribution of food, water and other non-food essential items.
