THE EDITOR, Sir:
SIR, I recently travelled to Jamaica for a funeral. The burial took place at Red Hills Cemetery, Morant Bay, St. Thomas. I was appalled at the condition of the cemetery. I was wondering if one of the dead was appointed to be the caretaker of the grounds. You could see that the high grass was not being cut, instead, they lit a fire through the cemetery and took care of that.
Some of the graves were in such bad conditions half of them had completely disappeared while the other half was still standing. They look like some weird caves that you could crawl in and out of, which leaves me to wonder if some of the dead actually just crawled out after everyone left.
It is unbelievable that this cemetery is in the capital of St. Thomas and in public view. Just looking at this pile of cement, dirt and garbage makes me realise why some people prefer to be cremated than be put to shame in such a God-forsaken place you could be happy to call hell.
I sure hope someone from the parish council or anyone with authority could at least take some control over this situation. With all due respect, I think even the dead deserve to be treated with some respect and dignity. At least, let their final resting place be respectable if that's the last thing we have to honour them.
I am, etc.,
