Fr. Richard HoLung accepts The Gleaner Honour Award for voluntary service from the Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke, yesterday at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston. Fr. HoLung's Missionaries of the Poor received the award for outstanding work with the poor and HIV-infected persons in Jamaica.

Five persons yesterday received The Gleaner Honour Award for Excellence in Education. They are from 2nd left: Ramon Arscott, Christina Thompson, Cornel Grey, Gayrol Taylor and Daniel Thomas. Sherone Simpson (right) and Aleen Bailey accepting a Gleaner Merit Award from Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke. They received the award in recognition of the 4x100m women's relay team's gold medal performance at the 2004 Olympics.

Professor Susan Walker, the University of the West Indies representative on the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica's (EFJ) board and Executive Director Lt. Commander John McFarlane, accept The Gleaner's Merit Award from the Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke. The award was received in recognition of EFJ's financial and other support given to science and technology in Jamaica.

Chairman of the Scientific Research Council (SRC) Conrod Douglas and executive director Audia Barnett accept The Gleaner Honour Award in the category Science and Technology, from the Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke.

Dr. Jonathan Greenland, executive director of the National Gallery of Jamaica, accepting The Gleaner Honour Award for arts and culture. The National Gallery received the award for making the fine arts more accessible to the average Jamaican.

Alphanso Cunningham accepts his Gleaner Merit Award from Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke. He won the country's first paralympic gold medal in 16 years with a record throw in class F53 discus at the 2004 games.

It was a festive affair yesterday when leaders from various sectors of society gathered to honour those chosen as the most outstanding Jamaicans of 2004. The occasion was the 25th annual Gleaner Honour Awards Luncheon held at the Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston.
Awards were presented in the fields of arts and culture, sports, voluntary service, business, science and technology, public
service and health and wellness, to those who have made exceptional contributions to the continued development of the country both locally and internationally.
