Ja making steady progress
published: Thursday | January 13, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

JAMAICA MAY not be showing double-digit growth at the present time. However, steady progress is being made, with the start and near completion of the highway from Negril to Port Antonio.

This infrastructure is a solid achievement for the advancement of the tourist trade, which should be the engine for potential growth. Secondly, Highway 2000 is another solid achievement. There is nothing like good communication for the advancement of a country, and this new highway should pay off substantially.

Thirdly, the proposal to make Montego Bay the economical hub of the country is a step in the right direction, This proposal should be hurried up and implemented immediately.

Fourthly, the Government should expand the tourist industry by giving the proper incentives to would-be developers of hotels etc. and get hotels built in other areas such as the Bluff along The Queens Highway, Falmouth, Duncans, Lucea in Hanover, the South Coast, (Treasure Beach) Mandeville and of course Kingston and Port Antonio.

I witnessed the growth of Hawaii. Before 1972 there was hardly any accommodation there (they grew pineapples). Now Hawaii is one of the most famous destinations in the world with hotels dotted all over the place. Jamaica should aim to get 10 million visitors to their shores in the next decade.

With a booming tourist trade, the bauxite industry and agriculture, Jamaica should generate enough jobs for all those who want to work. With all these projects up and running Jamaica should be a utopia, the nearest place to paradise.

God bless the country and its people. May both prosper forever.

I am, etc.,
