Mandeville fire hydrants in need of repairs
published: Thursday | January 13, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS MORE and more fires burn uncontrollably in different areas of the island, I am deeply concerned about the lack of maintenance on the fire hydrants in Mandeville. Fire hydrants that are not working and have been in need of repair for a long time are reported to the Fire Department, but the department is required to then send a request to Kingston and wait for a team to come to repair them.

That months go by and nothing is accomplished is not surprising, as it is the same team that is required to repair all the hydrants throughout the country! I am therefore calling on the minister to change this system and to allow each station to repair their hydrants in their own areas.

Surely, between the maintenance department, the Water Commission and private contractors, this can be done a lot faster and more efficiently than waiting on a team from Kingston that never seems to arrive!

I am, etc.,

SALLY PORTEOUS

Deputy Mayor of Mandeville
