Anthony Foster, Freelance ReporterOLYMPIANS DEON Hemmings and Winthrop Graham will be honoured at tomorrow's 15th staging of the PUMA/JAAA Development Meet to be held at Windalco's, Kirkvine's Sports Club, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Hemmings, who became Jamaica's first female individual Olympic gold medallist when she won the 400m hurdles in Atlanta nine years ago, and Graham, the 1992 Barcelona Olympic 400m hurdles silver medallist, will be honoured for their outstanding contributions to the development of the track and field in Jamaica.
NAME CHANGE
The PUMA/JAAA Development Meet was first staged in 1982 but under the name Manchester Amateur Athletics Association (MAAA) Development Meet which was hosted at Manchester High School on a 300m track. Four years later, the meet grew and attracted teams from across Jamaica.
Within the past four yearn an average of more than 125 schools and institutions have participated at the event. This year, junior stars such as two-time World Junior 200m silver medallist Anneisha McLaughlin, World Junior 400m silver medallist Sonita Sutherland, Carifta Games' Under-17 sprint double champion Schilloni Calvert (all of Holmwood), along with Edwin Allen's Sherene Pinnock, the World Junior 400m hurdles bronze medallist, and long distance 'queen' Natoya Goule of Manchester, among others.
