Gandhi on Jesus
published: Saturday | January 15, 2005
THE EDITOR, Sir:THIS IS a response to Jane Ackan's letter, 'The Same God' that was publised in The Gleaner, Friday, January 14, 2005. However, I must inform you that God is not to be made and fashioned in our own image and imagination. God is Love and as you rightly say "God doesn't change" His love for us is unconditional even when we go astray and disobey his commands.
People are not held responsible for not believing in God in some situations such as culture and the beliefs of a people. If these people grew up in a culture that does not recognise God then we have to pray harder for them that they may do the other things necessary for salvation e.g. loving their neighbour with an unconditional love. Only the Spirit of God can bring about that.
The Holy Spirit is active among all peoples. Thank God that we are Christians, and come from a world (West) that tolerates Christianity. Others refuse Christianity because of how we Christians behave. Mahatma Gandhi once said when he was asked why not Christianity. "I like your Jesus, But I cannot stand his followers."
I am, etc.,
