O'MEALLY-NELSONTHE POSTAL Corporation of Jamaica (Post Corp) yesterday denied reports that the agency was now being used by drug traffickers to transport contraband from Jamaica into the United Kingdom.
The Gleaner carried a report from the South London Press yesterday claiming that the London police had intercepted a package of crack/cocaine shipped to the UK through the Jamaican postal system. The Narcotics police corroborated the story.
PRIVATE COURIER
"The London Metropolitan Police Service has this morning confirmed that the drugs found were sent from Jamaica by way of a private courier company and not the post office. This is consistent with the reports on the case carried in several London newspapers," said the Postal Corporation.
Postmaster General, Dr. Blossom O'Meally-Nelson, declared, "drug and contraband interdiction procedures are coordinated and monitored by the police and Jamaica Customs Department. All packages carried by Jamaica Post are subjected to a range of security procedures including 'sniffer dogs', under the jurisdiction of the Jamaica Constabulary Force".
