PNP discusses new processes for elections
published: Wednesday | January 19, 2005

DISCUSSIONS RELATING to new procedures for the election of president and vice-presidents of the People's National Party (PNP) are expected to take centre stage at the party's conference on Saturday.

At present, delegates representing groups are allowed to elect persons to the most senior positions in the party.

This Saturday's one-day conference is to cost between $1 million and $2 million, according to Colin Campbell, the party's deputy general secretary in charge of communication and outreach.

RESOLUTION

Last year, Phillip Paulwell, member of Parliament for East Kingston and Port Royal, tabled the resolution in the party, to have a wider cross-section of the PNP members directly choose the party's top brass.

Mr. Campbell told The Gleaner Monday that the party's executive is to decide whether to eventually open what is expected to be a closed-door conference to the
public, including the media.

The annual conference of the PNP usually runs for three days in September of each year. However, last year's conference was postponed after the island was hit by Hurricane Ivan on September 10 and 11, 2004.
