JAS assists small farmers in Clarendon after 'Ivan'
published: Saturday | January 22, 2005

Stephanie Elliott, Gleaner Writer

CLARENDON:

SOME 700 farmers in Clarendon whose livelihoods were affected by Hurricane Ivan are to benefit from the Jamaica Agricultural Society's (JAS) donation of hand tools, mist blowers, seeds, fertilisers and stoves.

DONATION MADE AT DENBIGH

The donation was made to farmers at the Denbigh Agricultural Showground in Clarendon last Friday. Janet Pullen, JAS representative for Clarendon, said some 48 JAS groups, consisting of 16 members each, were slated to benefit from the effort.

Ms. Pullen explained that the mist blowers and pumps would be made available to farmers on a revolving basis at a minimal cost while those who were severely displaced were given a special donation of hybrid seeds and gas stoves. A total of seven gas stoves were given to farmers.

One farmer, Vincent Spencer, a member of the Ashley branch, told The Gleaner that he was grateful for the assistance being given to small farmers by the JAS.
