Above the law?
published: Saturday | January 22, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AT 7:10 yesterday morning, I was on my bicycle at the traffic light on Surbiton Road, waiting for the green light, when I saw a blue and grey Pajero driven by a man in a blue suit pulled up at the stop light on the wrong side of Surbiton Road. The driver looked up and down Hope Road and then charged across to Winchester Road.

Unfortunately, I was too shocked by this man's brazen lawlessness to look at his licence plates, or I would surely have sworn a statement against him to the police. I hope I will be more vigilant when the next occasion arises.

When one talks about lawlessness and indiscipline in Jamaican society, please do not limit the subject of such talk to the poor, the uneducated, and the 'dancehall culture'. While they may be the loudest violators, they are not the only violators, nor are they necessarily the worst violators. The worst violators are those who believe that the rules we all live by do not apply to them, and that rules are for 'lesser people'.

I am etc.,
