POWELLBRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP):
FAST BOWLER Jason Bennett stunned tournament leaders Jamaica with a five-wicket burst yesterday as the hosts sprung to life after conceding a first innings lead on the second day of the Carib Beer Series match at Windward club in St. Philip.
But Daren Powell completed a fine all-around day to guide the visitors' second innings from the peril of 26 for seven to 95 without further loss, an overall advantage of 136 at the close.
Fast bowler Powell, whose four wickets helped secure a 41-run first innings lead, hit a career-best, undefeated 47.
The 22-year-old Bennett ripped through the Jamaica top order with five for 34. New-ball mate Corey Collymore supported with two for 14.
Earlier, defending champions Barbados, overnight 23 for one in reply to Jamaica's first day total of 193, were bowled out for 152 on the stroke of tea.
NURSE TOP SCORES
Opener Martin Nurse top scored with 42 and captain Sherwin Campbell contributed a laborious 21.
Collymore initiated Jamaica's problems in the final session when Maurice Kepple edged the second ball of the innings to third slip.
Bennett began his destruction next over when Donovan Pagon was leg before.
It was soon two runs for three wickets as Carlton Baugh nicked a cut to first slip.
Bennett then took over and accounted for captain Tamar Lambert, Keith Hibbert, Lorenzo Ingram and David Bernard in quick succession.
LAMBERT CAUGHT
Lambert was caught at midwicket as he miscued a pull. Hibbert spent an hour compiling 10 before slicing a drive to gully.
Left-hander Ingram fended a lifter to the wicketkeeper and Bernard was bowled playing across the line of a yorker.
At 26 for seven, Jamaica were in danger of eclipsing their lowest ever regional total (71 against Trinidad and Tobago in 1989).
But Powell completed a satisfying day by propping up his faltering team.
He and Nikiti Miller shared an unbroken stand of 69 in an hour and a quarter to stall the progress of the Barbadians.
The 26-year-old Powell smacked four fours and a six off 69 balls in nearing his maiden first-class 50. Miller contributed a fluent 23 that included one boundary.
The first two sessions belonged to Jamaica as Barbados lost wickets at regular intervals.
Medium pacer Bernard led the Jamaican charge in the morning as the home team stuttered to lunch at 94 for five.
His key scalp was lefthander Nurse, who edged to Kepple at first slip after hitting five fours and a six. Bernard added Kurt Wilkinson in similar fashion, this time the nick gobbled up by Lorenzo Ingram at second slip after Kepple fumbled the initial offering.
Dwayne Smith under-edged a pull at Powell on to his stumps to leave Barbados wobbling at 81 for five.
Campbell and Shawn Graham led a mini-revival in a sixth wicket stand of 37 either side of the interval.
But left-arm spinner Miller claimed Graham to an edged drive to slip and Campbell was run out two runs later at 120 for seven.
Wicketkeeper Patrick Browne and Ryan Hurley fought back in adding 29 for the eighth wicket.
But the second needless run out brought a swift end as the last three wickets fell for three runs.
In Castries, St. Lucia, the Windward Islands ended on 58 for four wickets, chasing Guyana's first innings score of 176 in their third-round match at Beausejour.
Rain delayed play for more than two hours, the second day play was shortened by bad weather. Rain and bad light shortened the game by more than two hours on Friday.
The second day's play of the third-round match between Trinidad and Tobago and the Leeward Islands at the Queen's Park Oval was abandoned without a ball being bowled yesterday. Play was also not possible on the opening day of the encounter on Friday.
