TWO SECURITY companies will face the courts today to answer charges of obstructing the process of securing representational rights for their workers.
According to the Industrial Relations Unit at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Protection and Security Limited is being drawn before the courts for failing to provide vital information to the ministry in response to a representational rights claim served on the company by the National Workers Union (NWU).
Meanwhile, the other firm, Ranger Protection and Security Limited will go before the Half-Way Tree Resident Magistrate's Court, for failing to submit the information required for the processing of a representational rights claim, also served by the NWU.
NO FAVOURITES
In a release issued by the
ministry, Horace Dalley, minister of labour and social security, emphasised, "We take very seriously our role as leaders of conciliation in the social partnership for harmonious and progressive labour administration."
He added, "We do not, and cannot play favourites, so we work hard every day to ensure fair industrial relations practices, and where necessary, we let the law take its course to apply remedies to protect those at a disadvantage."
There has been a long running disagreement between trade unions and private security firms over the status of security guards, whether they should be classified as workers or contractors, which would make them ineligible for union representation.
