Under-20 Boyz swamp Haiti
published: Monday | January 24, 2005

JAMAICA'S Under-20 football team ended their one-week preparation in Florida with a morale-boosting 5-0 thumping of Haiti's Under-23 team in a practice match on Saturday night.

Five different players accounted for the goals to give the team its second win in two matches that complemented their fine-tuning ahead of this week's CONCACAF Final round qualifiers, for the under-20 FIFA Youth World Championship in Honduras.

Richard West started the rout in the 10th minute, Luton Shelton doubled the score two minutes later and Akeem Priestly added a third at the 39th for a 3-0 half-time lead.

It took some time for the Jamaicans to add to their tally in the second half but when they did, it came with a flurry as Steven Morrissey (79th) and Horace Howell (83rd) struck within four minutes to formulate the swamping total.

Earlier this week, the Under-20 Boyz had beaten a Miami-based Jamaica Invitational team 2-0 through goals from Priestly and O'Brian White.

The Jamaicans will leave Miami today for Honduras where they will tackle the hosts, Mexico and Canada in a quadrangular play-off for the Youth World Cup. They begin their quest on Wednesday with a match against Honduras, then play Mexico on Friday and Canada on Sunday.

Two teams will qualify.
