THE EDITOR, Sir:I FEEL compelled to write this letter as I was not available to be a part of this historic occasion. January 18 marked the final appearance in the Parliament of the Most Hon. Edward Seaga as he retires from active politics after more than 40 years. He has also relinquished the position of Opposition Leader and leader of the Jamaica Labour Party.
Thirty years as chief executive of any organisation is no small achievement moreso an institution such as the Jamaica Labour Party. During those years the party like many others had its fair share of problems - which included personal disagreements - but he has always stuck to the principled positions resulting in the correct decisions being taken. There are those of us who are satisfied that he never wavered from those positions or failed to provide strong and effective leadership.
His interest and commitment for the party were way above self as he has so often demonstrated and the systems and structures now in place are testimony to this. Many of us who had the opportunity to work closely with him and shared many experiences whether on the campaign trail, committee meetings, constituency activities, sporting or social events or being given a specific task. It was always an opportunity to learn something from him.
I would like to thank him for affording me the opportunity to serve the party under his leadership since 1976.
I am, etc.,
