The working poor ...
LAST TUESDAY was a low point for Sandra Brown - the cooking gas ran out, she got word that her father was ill, and she had to borrow (again) $1,000 for the taxi fare from May Pen to Frankfield, Clarendon, and to buy food and vegetables for him.

Surviving on the little they earn
For Joan Lennon, survival means making tough basic choices. She makes $2,500 a week working as a helper and supports two girls, 14 and 15, who are attending school.


Experts say...
Maureen Webber, President of Development Options Limited, says: Persons who earn within the minimum wage are unable to accumulate any form of wealth and therefore most do not have any kind of goals.
