THE VIOLENCE that has scarred sections of Spanish
Town during the past two weeks continued yesterday with the murder of 30-year-old Oneil Mullings along Market Street.
According to the Constabulary Communication Network, Mr. Mullings, who lived at Adelaide Street in the Old Capital, was gunned down at around 9:30 am. No arrest has been made.
Police have also made no arrests in the January 23 attack
by gunmen on the Ellerslie Pen community in Spanish Town
in which three persons were
murdered and six others injured. The gunmen were reportedly dressed in police uniforms.
Last week, Cislyn Dyer's son and son-in-law were injured in that assault. Both men are in the hospital.
Ms. Dyer said she was considering moving from the area as she feared for the safety of her family. "Mi nuh wan' leave an' dem (gunmen) tek over mi house but if a so, a so. Me'd a go country whe' mi family dey," said the 58 year-old mother of nine children.
The day after the bloody assault, several persons took flight from nearby Tawes Pen from where some Ellerslie Pen residents believe the gunmen came.
HORRIFIC INCIDENT
Persons that stayed in Ellerslie Pen have put up wooden barriers and attached padlocks to hastily erected zinc fences to prevent another attack. Ms. Dyer fought back tears as she recalled the
horrific incident which took place at around 11:30 am. At first she heard shouts of, 'Police, don't move'.
Then came a ferocious volley of gunshots.
"Mi look through the window and si some strange man an' dem start fire pure shot," she told The Gleaner. "Mi nuh si dem face, 'cause from mi hear the shot dem mi run go undaneath mi bed."
She says she did not leave the safety of her room until she was certain the gunmen had left.
Ellerslie Pen stands beside the Food For Poor relief organisation that has consistently supported the community by sponsoring sporting activities. Last year, the company went a step further and built several homes for residents. Most beneficiaries, including Miss Totlyn and some of her
children, moved into their new houses in June.
The Spanish Town police say approximately 181 persons were murdered in the town in 2004.
