THE CARIBBEAN Shipping Association (CSA) has established a scholarship at the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) in honour of Monica Silvera, late executive vice-president of the CSA.

In handing over the scholarship cheque to the CMI last week, Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester, president of the CSA, said: "This is one of the ways in which our association is recording our appreciation for the work and contribution of Monica Silvera to the growth and development of the Caribbean's maritime industry."

QUALIFICATION

Captain Hopeton Delisser, chairman of the CMI, accepted on behalf of the institute. The scholarship, called 'The Caribbean Shipping Association Monica Silvera Scholarship', is open to persons in member-countries of the CSA who qualify for entry to CMI courses. It will be offered to one awardee every two years or for the duration of the relevant course pursued (whichever is longer).

Monica Silvera was born in Jamaica and was a driving force behind the CSA for more than 21 years. She served as the association's corporate secretary before being appointed executive vice-president in October 2001.
She passed away peacefully at her home on June 1, 2002.
