OLYMPIAN MAURICE Smith broke the National Indoor Heptathlon record at last weekend's Clemson Heptathlon/Pentathlon Championships, at Clemson's University track and field indoor track center.

Smith, who finished 14th in the decathlon at the Athens Olympics, secured victories in the 60m hurdles (7.98), long jump (7.19), shot put (15.91) and 60m dash (7.05).

He also managed third place finishes in the 1000m (2:48.64) and pole vault (4.35m) events, then collected fourth spot in the high jump (1.88m) for 5749 points which was good enough to establish a new mark, erasing the previous record of 4770 points that Jabari Ennis set in New York three years ago.

Representing Auburn University, Smith defeated Keith Baker of Alabama (5265 points) and Unattached Kayne Dakoski (4879 points) on the way to establishing the new Jamaica standard.

Meanwhile, at the Patriot Games Open Invitational held at George Mason University, Ricardo Melbourne upset his George Mason and Jamaican teammate Richard Phillips in the 60 metres hurdles.

Phillips, a semi-finalist at last summer's Olympic Games, won his heat ahead of Melbourne, who returned to beat him in the final. Melbourne won the final in 7.91 seconds while Phillips was three-hundredth of a second behind in 7.93.

Phillips registered 7.90 seconds to win his preliminary heat ahead of Melbourne, a former Central State University (8.08) representative. Both are currently at George Mason University.
