Hydel serves up tennis programme
published: Wednesday | February 2, 2005

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

THE Hydel group of Schools launched its tennis programme last Friday with the official completion of its tennis court.

The founder of the group of schools, Mrs. Hyacinth Bennett, was congratulated for the move that continues the thrust of the school in the way of developing the child.

Congratulations came from national tennis director, Douglas Burke, and his co-ordinator Lloyd Johnson, who lauded Bennett's efforts at bettering education for the young.

Hydel, who have excelled at sports over the last few years at the younger levels, have decided to widen their sport base - a project that started with the building of the tennis court two months ago at a cost of aproximately $250,000.

In order to give the youngsters a push start in terms of building the programme, Burke donated a number of balls and rackets to Hydel, a gesture which was well appreciated by Mrs. Bennett.

"It is amazing how many kids are interested," she said proudly. "There is hardly any space left."

When asked what was the impetus for starting such a programme, Mrs. Bennett said:

"In keeping with Hydel's policy to develop the kids on a wholistic level, we thought it prudent to widen the sports base within the school.

"Not everyone will be a good track athlete or a good footballer and those students still need to develop in other areas outside of academics," she added.

LP AZAR CHAMPS

Meanwhile, in the King Alarm/LP Azar Amateur Tennis Championship being held at the Liguanea Club, interesting results continued to come to the fore. In the men's Class 1, Justin Morgan got the better of Marc Chin 6-4 6-4, John Azar was too much for Damion Rose, winning every game in their two sets 6-0 6-0, Htut Mteik defeated Andy Fennel 6-2 6-1, James Sampson had an easy time against Joel Jones in a 6-0 6-2 affair, and Allie McNab had a 6-3 6-4 victory over Dwayne Lue Shing.

In the men's Class 3, Marlon Brown defeated Franklyn Grenion 6-4 7-6, Arnold Douglas had to battle his way to victory in a tough three-setter against Conroy Julian that ended 6-2 1-6 10-8.

In the only game of the men's Class 4, Emil Janniers found himself no match for Oliver Thompson, who ran away a 6-0 6-2 winner.

In the women's 'B' Class there was also only one game where Catherine Bolton defeated Stacey Moore 6-5 6-4.
