THE EDITOR, Sir:
I THINK Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie should suspend his sign removal campaign with immediate effect. My sign was removed recently. Yours may be next.
It is having a very disastrous effect on the business community and it has shown up the insensitivity of the council.
Mr. Mayor, consider Highway 2000 without a sign and you would get the point I am driving at. You need to work with the business community by building blocks instead of driving wedges. You need to give the business community the benefit of the doubt as a lot of questions are being raised as to the propriety of removing the signs.
In your first campaign at sign removal, several persons complained that their signs were
illegally removed by the K.S.A.C. as they were given permission by the National Works Agency (NWA) to erect their signs. Businesses were under severe pressure and their very existence threatened. Instead of removing signs you should launch a campaign with the theme 'Say it with signs'.
EXEMPTIONS
I would like to inquire of you if all Government departments,
statutory bodies and executive agencies are exempt from securing a permit and have paid the necessary fees to erect their signs? If the answer is in the negative then you need to make an example of them. You need to lead by example. Bring about some transparency in your Council's administration.
I am etc.,
JOSEPH M. CORNWALL
