How do we change?
published: Thursday | February 3, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir

THE NEWS media has been bringing to our attention the atrocities that are taking place in our nation. But unless the rest of society agrees that these atrocities are unacceptable then nothing will change, we will only have talk. We need the society to outline the things it considers to be outrageous no matter to which political party one belongs, no matter which area of the nation it occurs and no matter who did it. We need to ascertain what the people in the nation are prepared to do personally to address this problem, for as long as it is seen as the problem of the government or the crime forces, it will not be solved.

Community problems are usually solved when the majority of the community wants it solved and when they are prepared to see it addressed. We also need to come to an agreement in terms of what the real issues that are to be addressed and agree on the solutions or else no united effort will be made and change will elude us. There needs to be recognition that the solution to the problem will not occur overnight, however, if the majority of the nation is united in addressing the problem with the help of the Lord it can be dealt with. However as long as the society takes a hands-off approach, things will get worse and our children and we, will suffer. There is not much time.

I am, etc.,

BRUCE FLETCHER
