Gunmen invade Mt Salem
published: Saturday | February 5, 2005

WESTERN BUREAU:

A SENIOR citizen was shot and injured in the Katon Lane area of Mt. Salem in Montego Bay on Thursday night when gunmen travelling in a white Toyota Corolla motorcar invaded the community, firing shots with impunity.

The injured man is retired construction worker Samuel 'Sammy' Brissette, 68. Mr. Brisette, who is partially paralysed on his left side and walks with a cane, was shot in his right thigh.

He was shot as he stood conversing with another man at the intersection of the Mt. Salem main road and Katon Lane.

The car, with an unknown number of armed men aboard, drove into the area at about 8:40 p.m, according to an eyewitness. The vehicle stopped in the vicinity of a group of men standing under an ackee tree.

Some men left the car with guns drawn and began firing wildly at a young man who was standing in the group.

EVASIVE ACTION TAKEN

The man who appeared to be the target of the attack, "run like a thief to escape with his life," said the eyewitness. "Even when him scale a couple fence they still kept chasing him and firing more shots."

With the target of their attack having escaped, the gunmen reportedly ran back to their vehicle and as they drove off, they again opened fire, turning their attention on the persons who were running away from the scene. It is believed that Mr. Brissette was shot during that second bout of shooting.

When The Gleaner visited the scene on Friday, a team of detectives from the Mt. Salem police were at the scene of the shooting, collecting evidence. Asked how many spent shells were recovered, one of the investigators replied, "enough to kill two dozen people."

In October 2003, six men were shot during a drive-by shooting at the scene of Thursday night's incident. Christopher Calhoun was killed during that incident.
