WESTERN BUREAU:
DR. HORACE Chang, deputy leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), will make an appearance in the Black River Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday to answer assault charges.
The charges stem from an incident almost two weeks ago in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, in which he allegedly pulled his licensed firearm to ward off JLP supporters of Senator Norman Horne. Dr. Chang was meeting with party members to discuss Horne's resignation as JLP caretaker of the South East St. Elizabeth constituency.
"We are going to court on Friday and, of course, our plea will be one of not guilty and that's as much as we know," said attorney-at-law George Thomas, who is providing legal counsel for the member of Parliament for North West St. James.
The incident was reported to the Black River police, who investigated the matter and submitted the file to the director of public prosecutions ((DPP) for a ruling. The DPP subsequently ruled last Friday that a charge of assault be levelled against Dr. Chang.
