DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Morant Bay High are well-placed to retain their JNBS-sponsored Eastern Athletics Championships title entering today's final day inside the National Stadium.
At the end of yesterday's opening day where 13 of 68 finals were decided at Stadium East, Morant Bay led the overall standings with 110 points.
They are followed by Oberlin (67), Glengoffe (42), St. Mary High (40), St. Thomas Technical (38), Yallahs (37), Marymount (28), St. Mary's College (27), Seaforth and Titchfield (20 each) rounding off the top 10.
Again, Morant Bay lead the female and male sections with 78 and 32 points respectively.
In the female section, Oberlin (43), Glengoffe (32), St. Thomas Technical (31) and Marymount (28) trailed, while Oberlin (32), St. Mary High and St. Mary's College (16 each) and Yallahs (12) are among the top five in the boys' section.
ON TARGET
Morant Bay's coach Rohan Bryan was happy with the day's results, saying they are on target for a big total.
"We have two persons in most finals for tomorrow (today). We are in all the relay finals, except one. We haven't started our strong events (hurdles) as yet, so we are right where we want to be right now ... right amont of points to close it out tomorrow."
Fifty-five finals are down to be contested today, starting at 9:15 a.m. with the 400m hurdles Open finals.
National representative Kimona Smith of Morant Bay won the girls' Class Two long jump with a leap of 5.77 ahead of her teammate Trudy-Ann Powell (4.93).
Shaneque Headley of St. Thomas won the girls' Class Two discus with a throw of 27.64 metres; Powell took the Class Two high jump at 1.55m; Shannique Tinker of Glengoffe leapt 1.55m for victory in the girls' Class One high jump; and Sashae Hosine of Oberlin threw 29.42m to win the girls' Class One discus.
Christopher Waugh of St. Mary's College won the boys' Class Two discus with a throw of 31.26m, while David McLean took Class One with 38.27m; The boys' Class One long jump went to Dwight Webley of Morant Bay with 6.59m; Tashian Smith leapt 1.60m for the girls' Class Three high jump title; while Natasha Morrison of Glengoffe won the girls' Class Four with a 4.75m jump.
