J'cans in Atlanta to help in Guyana relief effort
published: Wednesday | February 9, 2005

By Derrick A. Scott, Gleaner Writer

ATLANTA, Georgia:

THE JAMAICAN community in Atlanta is to assist Guyana as a result of the recent flooding that has struck that country.

This was disclosed by Jamaica's honorary consul in Atlanta, Vin Martin, at a meeting at his Stone Mountain office with representatives from the Guyanese community in Atlanta.

Heading the delegation was Guyana's honorary trade representative to Atlanta, Neilson O. Wray; former president of the Guyana Association of Georgia, Dawn Simmonds; and Hazel Martin, wife of Jamaica's honorary consul who is from Guyana.

Mr. Martin, in discussion with the delegation, said that he is committed to rallying the support of the Jamaican and the Caribbean community in Atlanta to assist Guyana in their time of need.

SUPPORT IN TIME OF NEED

In expressing his sympathy to the Guyanese people as a whole, the Jamaican representative promised to stimulate the Jamaican and Caribbean community in the Atlanta area to do their best in support of Guyana's national flood relief effort.

Mr. Martin also pointed out that the Guyanese community in Atlanta had supported Jamaica during Hurricane Ivan, and it was only fitting that the country support them in their time of need.

He further disclosed that he, along with the Guyanese community, will be organising a telethon, which will involve the Caribbean radio stations and other Caribbean organisations in Atlanta. The telethon will run for three days and all funds and items will be donated to Guyana.

Meantime, Mr. Wray has set up a task force in Atlanta to coordinate local relief efforts which will work to collect as many items and funds needed to provide relief to those most seriously affected.

Mr. Wray noted that all forms of contributions and donations received in Atlanta will go to the joint operations centre established by the Guyanese Government, and would be forwarded expeditiously.

He said that all monetary donations should be sent to the National Relief Fund, Bank of Nova Scotia, 104 Carmichael Street, Georgetown, Guyana, Account No. 109780.

Mr. Wray also noted that monetary donations can be sent to his office at 5683 Redan Road, Stone Mountain, Georgia 30088, USA.
