VERE TECHNICAL's girls sent a strong warning to Girls' Champs favourite St. Jago with some dominant displays at last weekend's PUMA/JAAA's Development Meet at Jamalco Sports Club.

Vere Technical swept the 1500m and fell one short of a 400m sweep. The Clarendon-based school also won two of four 100m events and although St. Jago was absent Vere, and their coach Dwayne Jarrett, can take some positives going into the March 16-19 Champs. In 1500m Class One, Kenish Jones (4.58.3) came out on top over Edwin Allen's pair of Jodian Richards (4.59.2) and Kerone Miller (4.59.2) while Petrona Layne won the girls' Class Two in 4.58.0, again beating Edwin Allen's pair of Trudy-Ann Williams (4.59.4) and Marvia Lewin (4.59.4).

In Class Three, Tenisha Davis won in 5.00.1, ahead of the Manchester High pair of Kimberley Brown (5.07.3) and Neisha Morgan (5.09.1).

In the 400m, Vere took the top two spots with Kayon Robinson (57.6) and Kendra Minott (58.2) in Class Two and Julian Levy (59.00) and Tenisha Davis (59.7) in Class Three. In Class Four, Shanique Robinson (62.1) defeated Manchester's Coleen Spencer (62.2) for Vere's third 400m win. The Class One title was won by Manchester's Stephanie Simpson (57.4) ahead of Jodian Richards of Edwin Allen (58.1).

University's of Technology's (UTech) Shericka Williams (54.1) won the women's 400m Open event ahead of Paula Mullings of G.C. Foster College (58.6).

Vere also took Class Three and Four 100m titles while collecting second places in the other classes. In Class Three, Jura Levy (11.8) took top honours ahead of Kedesha Simpson of Glenmuir (11.8) and Edwin Allen's Gayon Evans (12.00), while Shanique Robinson (12.1) won Class Four over Coleen Spencer of Manchester (12.2) and Josette Campbell of Edwin Allen (12.2).

In the other classes, Anneisha McLaughlin of Holmwood (11.7) defeated Vere's Shauna-Kay Wright (12.1) and Shanel Hamm (12.3) in Class One while Edwin Allen's Shakeeri Cole, Nicole Wilson of Vere, Rushell Stephenson of Excelsior and Renee Roper, also of Vere shared the spoils in Class Two with identical 12 seconds clockings.

On the boys' side, Claude McKay took classes Two and Three of the 1500m. Gordon Garnett (4.47.4) won in Class Three ahead of Calabar's Allacordo Edwards (4.47.4) while Kirk Smith (4.47.4) took Class Two ahead of Andre Thomas of Greater Portmore (4.47.4).

In Class One, Vere's Kayon Smith (4.09.0) won ahead of Jermaine Clayton of Bellefield High (4.09.0). Jamaica College's (JC) Winston Barnes and Central's Triston Taylor shared Class Two 100m honours with 10.7 times. Holmwood's Ramalo Turner took Class One in 10.4 ahead of Jason Hinds of Haile Selassie High (10.6). Calabar's Ramone McKenzie (53.1) won the boys' Class Three 400m over Jovan Martin of Kemp's Hill High (53.9).

Knox's Barthlett Barnett (51.7) and Carlington Morgan (49.4) won in classes Two and One ahead of Uriel Lewis of Calabar High (51.9) and Kerome Robinson of Holmwod (49.5) respectively. World Championships 200m silver medallist Christopher Williams was second in the men's 400m in 49.6, beaten by Paul Bogle of G.C. Foster College in 48.6.
