Arthur Green, Gleaner WriterST. THOMAS: SCORES OF residents from about 13 St. Thomas communities took to the streets last week to express their disgust with the lack of potable water in their areas.
Approximately 200 residents from Pear Tree River, Bowden, Arcadia, Stokes Hall, Winchester, Golden Grove, Duckensfield, Hampton Court, Chizwik, Dalvey, Rocky Point, Spring Field and Barking Lodge joined the demonstration.
They complained that the water source at Apple Farm, Pleasant Hill, which was supposed to be serving their districts had been redirected to the more urban areas of the parish. They say Port Morant, Blue Mahoe and Prospect are given priority, leaving them without adequate supplies of the commodity and with few alternatives. The protesters said the original intent of the water project which was established some years ago included serving their domestic needs.
St. Thomas Parish Council member, Lance Comrie, has placed a request before the council for the Ministry of Water and Housing and the NWC to compensate St. Thomas for the millions of gallons piped out of the parish daily. This resolution was tabled at a January meeting of the parish council.
