THE EDITOR, Sir:I READ, with distress, a recent news report that yet another set of children suffered because of adult negligence. Two children, six and three years old, were left at home alone and eventually perished in a fire there.
I am wondering if by now
people do not realise that you cannot do that. That is why we talk of an 'age of accountability' they are just not there yet. It is our task as adults to protect our children until then, and maybe even after.
It has become such a problem in this country that I wonder if whenever it is done (leaving
children alone) the persons
committing the crime do not sense that they may return home to an 'unexpected' disaster.
Actually, that is exactly what it is. So, the authorities can also
be blamed. If stingent, public admonition of these crimes is more frequently done, then these acts
will lessen and the unnecessary
weeping will stop.
I am etc.,
