BRIDGEPORT HIGH'S Camoi Hood highlighted Saturday's 'King of the Ring' throwing meet, held at Kingston College.

Hood, the CARIFTA Games Under-20 shot put champion, won both Penn Relays qualifying events, shot put (12 lbs) and discus (1.6kg).

He won the shot put with a throw of 17.37 metres, ahead of Andre Clarke of St. Jago (16.79m) who qualified with this throw. St. Jago's Steve Hammond, who qualified from the Big Shot Invitational, was third with a throw of 16.16m.

In the discus, Hood bettered his 48.13m done at the Big Shot Meet when he threw 51.75m for Saturday's victory. He defeated Hammond (50.07) and Bridgeport's Raymond Brown (46.91m). All three boys, however, qualified for the Penn Relays.

TOP SCHOOL GIRL

In girls' Open action, top school girl Phelecia Reynolds of St. Hugh's won the overall girls' discus (1 kg). She threw 36.01 to beat Jerrine Foster of Alpha (35.23) and Jianne Shackleford of Bridgeport (29.62m).

However, Foster returned to win the girls' shot put (13 lbs), throwing 11.78 metres to beat her teammate Shadreaca Wilson (9.78m). Reynolds complained of shoulder pain and did not contest this event.

Meanwhile, in other sections, KC's Keiton Wilson won the boys' Class Two double.

Wilson (41.49m) defeated Shawn Samuels of Calabar (38.79m) in the discus (1.5kg), while securing victory in the shot put (5kg) with a throw of 14.53m, again beating Samuels (14.17m).

PENN RELAYS PROSPECTS

In Class One, most of the Penn Relays prospects returned to compete. Hammond won the discus (1.75kg) with a throw of 48.46, ahead of Hood (46.34) and Sharif Small of JC (45.03).

In the shot put (6 kg), Small had the best throw, 14.4 over CARIFTA Games Under-17 double silver medallist Ramone Birch (13.46), also of JC.

National junior coach Michael Vassell said the meet had achieved most of what it had set out to do.

He was speaking of Clarke's qualifying throw and other good performances from the Class One and Two.

"We are getting there," Vassell said. "We might just have another meet to get other Penn Relays qualifiers."
