Titles up for grabs at National Stadium pool today
published: Thursday | February 17, 2005

By Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

HILLEL ACADEMY, Campion College, Immaculate High and Wolmer's Prep all have titles to defend between today and tomorrow as the Mayberry Investments Prep/Primary and High Schools Swim Meet takes place at the National Stadium pool.

The meet will see 54 schools in total split down the middle between the secondary and primary levels and about 2,000 entrants are expected to take part.

Action on both days is divided into two sessions with the first beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 11:00 a.m. The second session starts at 2:00 p.m and is scheduled to end at 4:30 p.m.

Last year, six records tumbled but this time around the challenge might be more difficult..

In the Prep/Primary Schools section which takes place today, preparations for the G-SAT examinations have severely affected some teams and might allow other teams to catch up.

FEWER SWIMMERS ENTERED

While the number of schools entering the two-day meet hasn't decreased the number of swimmers has. However, according to Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ) president Dale Spencer, this is not a concern.

"We are satisfied with the turnout because we knew that moving the meet a day forward would have this effect," he said.

ASAJ vice-president in charge of swimming, Kendese Nangle, pointed to the 'Swim Jamaica Programme' as another reason not to be worried about the numbers at this year's Mayberry meet.

"The Swim Jamaica Programme, where we go around to schools and offer to help with the coaching of the sport is up and running now, so hopefully it will improve the interest," Nangle said.
