WESTERN BUREAU:
A WHOPPING 18 records were broken and two equalled on Tuesday at the County of Cornwall Athletics Association's (COCAA) Western Championships that were held at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex in Montego Bay.
Mannings' outstanding Class Three runner Darrion Bent was the star of the day smashing three records, winning the 200m in 22.05 seconds, the 400m in 50.87 seconds and the 800m in 2:05.37 to establish himself as the one to beat at the VMBS Boys Champs next month.
Mt. Alvernia High's Alicia Cutenar broke two records, taking the Class Two 100m/200m sprint double in 11.79 and 23.58 seconds respectively.
MANNINGS RETAIN DOUBLE
A preliminary points tally shows Mannings School retained the double but by only a one-point margin in the boys' section, 331-330 over Herbert Morrison. The points will be rechecked at a meeting this morning and ratified. The respective class champions will also be named then.
In the girls' section Mannings have a healthy 35.5 points lead over St. Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) 319.5 to 284 and look set to retain that section.
Mannings came into the day with a lead in the girls' section but trailed Herbert Morrison in the boys'.
Mt Alvernia High, who did not take part last year, made their presence felt with an impressive 231 points for third place in the girls' section while Godfrey Stewart High had their best ever showing scoring 102 points in the girls' section for sixth place and 81 in the boys' for eighth place. Last year the Sav-la-Mar school scored 33 points in the girls' and 20 in the boys' section.
In addition to the performances by Bent and Cutenar, there were also outstanding results from a number of other athletes including Mt. Alvernia High's Yushanni Durrant who won the Class Three 80m hurdles in 11.66 seconds, much faster than the 12.7 seconds she ran at the eliminations two weeks ago.
Lewisville's Judith Powell broke the Class Three girls' 800m record with 2:22.83 seconds and was one of several triple winners as she retained the 3,000m Open title to the 1,500m she had won at the eliminations.
Mannings Michelle Mattis broke former national junior representative Nickesha Anderson's time for the Class One 100m when she ran 11.39 seconds to take one of her two individual gold medals. She also won the 100m hurdles in 15.44 seconds.
NEW CLASS THREE RECORD
Munro College's Duran Brown won the Class One 100m in a 10.35 seconds to erase the time of 10.4 set by Damion Young of Green Island set two years ago.
Dexter Lee of Herbert Morrison set a new Class Three 100m record with a 10.94 seconds clocking while Lewisville's Zaire Maitland broke the record in the Class Three and Four boys' 3,000m, running 10:18.43 seconds.
