WESTERN BUREAU:
THE HUNDREDS of vendors in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, who are now doing business on the streets of the town, may not be accommodated in a facility any time soon. Local authorities are still awaiting funding to complete repairs to the market, which was damaged during Hurricane Ivan last September.
Some repairs were done to the
market, which was expected to have allowed it to be used for the Christmas season, according to a December announcement from the town's mayor, Delford Morgan. However, the facility was not in a state to accommodate the vendors at that time.
"We are expecting $7 million
promised by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), so we can carry out improvements to the market and the sewerage facility," Mayor Morgan announced in a recent meeting of the public health committee of the Westmoreland Parish Council.
As vendors and members of the public continue to complain about the inconvenience of street vending and the slow pace of repairs to the market, the committee decided to send an urgent reminder to JSIF in respect of the promised financial assistance.
Meanwhile, Wellesley Keddo, the manager of the market, in giving an update on the repair work, said the damaged roof of the old section was fixed and the inside walls repainted; the roof of the fish area was also repaired but nothing has yet been done to the roof of the new section.
