MINISTER OF Industry and Tourism, Aloun N'Dombet Assamba has called on the productive sector to actively take the necessary steps in reclaiming local markets and ensuring that their operations are in a position to confidently negotiate market access in the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).

Speaking at the launch of Caribbean Cement Company's newest cement product on Wednesday at the Hilton Hotel in St. Andrew, Minister Assamba said that with its new product, the company had demonstrated a firm understanding of the need for local industries to continue to improve products and services that are competitive, of the highest quality and cost effective if they are to remain players in the region and in the global marketplace.

Wednesday's launch introduced the new Carib Cement Plus to industry professionals and customers of the cement company as an affordable, strong, versatile cement for local building projects.

In sharing some of Caribbean Cement Company's development plans, Chairman Brian Young said that the company was working assiduously to become the best cement manufacturing company in the region.

He said that, by 2008, the company expected to be operating a plant with significantly increased capacity, greater efficiency and better capabilities to compete globally.

Describing the company's programme as transformational, general manager, Anthony Haynes said that Carib Cement's ABC plan comprised optimising the existing plant, expanding and modernising its operations and introducing a blended cement to the market.

Chief Executive Officer of Caribbean Cement's parent company, Trinidad Cement Limited Group of Companies, Dr. Rollin Bertrand said that the company's development thrust was leading the way in securing the group's efforts to stay on top of global trends in the cement marketplace.

Also speaking at the launch were the presidents of the Jamaica Manufacturers' Association the Incorporated Masterbuilders' Association of Jamaica.
