NATIONAL CENTRAL defender Tyrone Marshall says Jamaica's hopes of winning a third Caribbean Football Union title lie in scoring early goals.
He made the comment at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium Thursday, one day before the team's departure for Barbados.
"The key for us is scoring early," said the utility player who scored against Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup qualifying at the National Stadium way back in 2001 a game which Jamaica won 1-0.
"The longer we take to score the more
difficult it will become, thus it will be very
crucial for us to get the early goal," Marshall said.
Marshall was among the few seasoned
players spared by the Jamaica Football Federation after the Reggae Boyz'
disappointing exit from the World Cup
qualifying campaign. He has described his role as being somewhat like that of a guardian for the youngsters in the team.
"For me it is like sitting back and
allowing the youngsters to do the work. As a senior man my job is definitely to be in the right place at all times," Marshall said.
BIG VICTORIES
The new-look Reggae Boyz have recorded some big victories on their way to Barbados and they have served as real encouragement for Marshall who believe that the Boyz can win the CFU Championships.
"I think our chances are good. When you look back at the way we have played in the tournament it is really encouraging," he said.
"Playing against St. Lucia was a good test for us in St. Lucia. That really tested our character. French Guiana was a good team and we destroyed them," Marshall added.
The Reggae Boyz drew 1-1 with St. Lucia in St. Lucia and then turned in a 2-1 victory at the National Stadium before moving on to beat French Guiana 5-0 here and drawing 0-0 with them away. Jamaica, the No. 1 Caribbean side face Trinidad at 5:00 p.m. today before turning their attention to hosts Barbados on Tuesday. They finish the campaign against Cuba on Thursday.
