Nicholson, Chuck to have second CCJ meeting
published: Monday | February 21, 2005

A SECOND meeting has been scheduled between Senator A.J. Nicholson, minister of justice, and Delroy Chuck, Opposition spokesman on justice, for this Thursday.

This week's meeting follows a meeting between the two last Wednesday which commenced talks on the course to be taken for conciliatory discussions on the establishment of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), between the government and the Opposition.

According to Senator Nicholson, though Wednesday's meeting was cordial, no decisions have yet been made on the course of future discussions.

Speaking to The Gleaner last week, the justice minister also indicated that recent media reports on the CCJ matter were not discussed during the first meeting.

He was referring to reports that Mr. Chuck did not believe the Opposition would be willing to come to an agreement with the government on the establishment of the CCJ until new party leader Senator Bruce Golding gains a seat in the House of Representatives.

Senator Golding has been selected to represent the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in the West Kingston constituency seat recently vacated by former Opposition Leader Edward Seaga.

It is now left to Prime Minister P.J. Patterson to call the by-election that could see Mr. Golding entering the Lower House

Senator Nicholson also told The Gleaner that Mr. Chuck had not yet provided the government with a list of members to be included on a five or six-man opposition team to discuss the CCJ with a similar Government team. The government has indicated that it will not publicly name its team until it has received the Opposition's list.
