Seba cop second title
published: Monday | February 21, 2005

Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

SEBA UNITED on Saturday kept up their stranglehold on the Captains Bakery Western Confederation Super League when they strolled to a 2-0 win over Sandy Bay in the End-of-Second round final at the Rusea's field in Lucea.

Two goals in a nine-minute span - both from bad defensive errors - in the first half, gave Seba their eighth win in a row and two End-of-Round final titles this season. Kemar Sterling was credited with the first goal in the 16th minute after a spot kick taken by goalkeeper Wade Duncan was blocked by the Seba player and looped over the head of the goalkeeper and into the unprotected goal.

Duncan was also at fault for the next goal when he gave up on a speculative grounder from Sean Bucknor that crept in at the base of the far post.

LEADS OVERALL STANDINGS

The Montego Bay team leads the overall standings on 28 points, six from bonuses having won the two finals and look set to take their place in the semi-finals long before the end of the third round.

Sandy Bay are on 16 points, second in Zone 1 to Mount Salem, three more than Harmony.

Seba dominated Saturday's game throughout but failed to capiltalise on their dominance, a point that was not missed by coach Paul 'Tegat' Davis, who told The Gleaner afterwards.

"We got carried away. We led early but were still making simple mistakes and should have showed a lot more patience."

Davis was happy for the two goals, however, and instead of accepting them as gifts, said they came about through the "hard work of the forwards".

Sandy Bay's coach, Mark Calvin, accepted that Seba was the better team on the day, saying his team "played below par".

He added: "They must have been overawed by the brand name team".

He said the loss was not the end, however, as they will be seeking one of the four semi-final places.
